What it does — and does not do

What it does

  • Shows tendencies for shrinkage porosity, whether risers are needed, mold filling and surface sink, with their locations, from the geometry and the alloy
  • Checks the risers placed by the caster (are they large enough, does the metal reach, is there enough feed metal)
  • Builds up your results to pull the judgment toward your own figures
  • Says so where it cannot judge (purple, input confidence, ▲)

What it does not do (and what you get instead)

Does not doInstead
Flow simulation (CFD) — turbulence, entrainment, time-stepped fillingOverall tendencies come out quickly, so you can swap in many rigging layouts and compare them (more comparisons in the same time)
Gravity, pouring speed, runner and gate designThe assessment does not depend on orientation, so the caster is free to choose the rigging orientation
Guarantees on absolute values (e.g. "this riser will always give a sound casting")Location and relative ranking can be relied on; absolute values can be pulled toward your own results through calibration
Judging gas defects, entrainment, inclusions or mold breakageRecords that look like these get a ▲ and are set aside as outside this tool’s scope (helps avoid the wrong countermeasure)
Analysis of cast ironNot covered. It does not force out numbers
Pass/fail on a single partIt sticks to ranking the risky areas
